Kibbutz Shamir

The Moshe Kagan Gallery on Kibbutz Shamir exhibits the works of artist Moshe Kagan, whose art can be found in museums and private collections around the world. Kagan, a member of Kibbutz Shamir, did not stop creating until his last very last days at the age of 94.

Kagan never studied painting or art. He was an autodidact in archeology, history, vegetation and of course painting and art.

He was born in the city of Krementz, which was part of Poland. From an early age Moshe Kagan learned to draw from painters who came to paint his beautiful city.

In 1940, he left his family and went to work as a dental technician in Baku. He was a soldier with the Polish Democratic army fighting alongside the Red Army and participated in the liberation of Warsaw and the occupation of Berlin.

In 1948 he immigrated to Israel and joined Kibbutz Shamir, established a family and worked as a shepherd and at the optics factory.

Sources of his inspiration: The wars he took part in, his family’s murder in the Holocaust and his son’s fall in service. And the views from the Hula Valley.

The Moshe Kagan gallery is open in with advance booking. Each visitor receives a postcard booklet with Kagan’s best paintings. The Kagan family also produced a film in which Kagan tells the story of his life and his works, suitable for group screening (movie Length: 45 minutes).

The visit to the gallery is free of charge.
