Kibbutz Sufa was established in 1974 about two kilometers east of the city of Yamit in the northern Sinai desert. The kibbutz is currently evacuated.
On October 7, 2023, as part of a surprise attack on Israel, dozens of terrorists from the terrorist organization Hamas stormed the kibbutz. The kibbutz emergency squad identified the terrorists at an early stage, killed several of them and stopped most of the terrorists from entering the kibbutz, protecting the lives of about 200 local residents. Three members of the kibbutz were murdered in the attack (Battle of Kibbutz Sufa).
Following the peace agreements with Egypt and the withdrawal from the Sinai in 1982, the Kibbutz Sufa was relocated to its current location near the border crossing between Egypt and Gaza in southern Israel.
In Hebrew, “Sufa” means a sandstorm and the name of the kibbutz was given to it because of the strong sandstorms that hit the area when the kibbutz was still in the Sinai. Some say that the name also symbolizes the “quick-as-a-sandstorm” opening of the Six Day War.
