Kibbutz Samar is located in the Aravah valley in the far south of Israel near Eilat.
Kibbutz Samar is a cooperative kibbutz that was established in 1976 by the National Kibbutz. Its founders are members of kibbutzim who chose to leave their original kibbutzim and set up another kibbutz.
The origin of the name “Samar” is in the bush that grows near springs of brackish water in the desert, and is used for plaiting mats and baskets.
Kibbutz Samar’s economy is based on an organic date plantation, a dairy farm, a control plant and more. The branches in Samar are based on self-employment, which means that there are almost no Israeli salaried workers nor foreign workers. The date plantation – 11,000 trees, accounts for 60% of the economy, which promotes mechanical solutions for manpower.
Kibbutz Samar is one the most interesting kibbutzim, collective with a modern twist, also known as the “anarchist kibbutz”. Why? You’ll find out here…
