Kibbutz Dorot, located in southern Israel, was established during Hanukkah in 1941 by Jewish refugees from Germany, who farmed grain, fruit trees, and vegetables. The kibbutz is currently evacuated.

Kibbutz Dorot is known worldwide for its garlic. Yes, garlic!

This is the story (on te tip of the fork)… In the late 1980s, member of Kibbutz Dorot, Giora Stav, collected garlic cloves that couldn’t be marketed. He peeled, crushed, froze the garlic in jars and handed out the frozen garlic to neighbors. Everyone wanted more. Giora started producing the garlic in the kibbutz’s kitchen. But, the kitchen workers couldn’t tolerate the strong odor and they soon showed him the door out.

Giora didn’t give up. A trailer was placed in his yard, and there, in fact, his frozen produce began to gain popularity throughout the country and worldwide. Today, “Dorot Gardens” products are sold all over the world, including in supermarkets such as Walmart.

In the kibbutz itself (named after Dov, Rivka and Tirza Hoz who perished in a car accident), there are more flavors and aromas besides the garlic and herbs. Among other things, there is a kibbutz country lodge, a second-hand shop and a pub known as the “Bakery Pub”.
