Kibbutz Beit Kama, established in 1949, is located between Beer Sheva and Kiryat Gat. In the great kibbutz crisis of the 1990’s, Kibbutz Beit Kama was on the verge of dissolution. All the credit cards were collected from members and cash was given only once a week. But then the courts approved a creditors’ settlement and a stay of proceedings provided that 135 lots would be marketed for a community extension neighborhood.
This cooperative kibbutz had become such a closed community that in 15 years they did not even accept a single member for membership and suddenly 135 families were about to join the extension neighborhood.
For some kibbutzim, the expansion was a devastating blow to the community, but not in Kibbutz Beit Kama. For the kibbutz that was not very financially successful until then, the expansion marked the beginning of a flourishing era.
Today the community in Kibbutz Beit Kama is vibrant, young, socially, communally and culturally involved. There are hundreds of children in the education system. There are joint kibbutz trips, cultural evenings and holidays.
