A Kibbutz Love Story
One of the most beautiful love stories I have ever heard…
Daniel was seven feet tall and Ella, his wife, was, how to say, five foot and a bit. They came to Kibbutz Shaar Haamakim as part of the Hashomer Hatzair group.
Daniel later became a farmer in the sunflower fields. Most of all they liked to walk together in the kibbutz fields, but their walks in the sunflower fields deeply saddened Daniel. The sunflowers were then so high that only he could see their beauty while Ella had to settle for a forest of stems (and a shower of shells).
So Daniel went to work and developed, in the name of love some say, a dwarf sunflower at a height of five foot and a bit. And along the way, the late Daniel Yitzhaki changed the face of the world’s sunflowers.
Till this day, sunflowers are being grown and new varieties developed on Kibbutz Shaar Haamakim.
