Kibbutz Nirim is located in the northern Negev in southern Israel near the border with the Gaza Strip. The kibbutz is currently evacuated.
On October 7, 2023, as part of a surprise attack on Israel, terrorists from the terrorist organization Hamas invaded Kibbutz Nirim, massacred its residents and kidnapped five of them to the Gaza Strip (Nirim Massacre). After hours of fighting by the kibbutz’s standby squad, and then also by the IDF forces, the kibbutz was cleared of terrorists.
With the outbreak of the war, the members of the kibbutz were evacuated to a hotel in Eilat and later decided to live temporarily in Beer Sheva.
Prior to the war, Nirim was engaged in organic farming and grew peanuts, sweet potatoes, turnips, carrots, wheat, barley, avocados and other vegetables, exporting much of their produce to Europe. Farmers worked the land right up to the Gaza Strip fence.
With all the difficulty of agriculture on the Gaza Strip border – Kibbutz Nirim managed to yield the best achievements in the country in field crops, orchards, greenhouses and dairy farming. Nirim was also one of the largest and most prosperous organic farms in Israel. And all this under constant threat of attacks coming from Gaza.
