Kibbutz Maabarot is located in the center of the country. Unlike most other kibbutzim, the West remains a cooperative kibbutz.
In September 1933, a group of settlers from the “Hashomer Hatzair” movement came to Wadi Huwarat (today called the Hefer Valley) and its members built four barracks and a fence around them. Two years later, the name “Maabarot” was chosen for the kibbutz which means “transit camp”. Did those pioneers imagine that the run-down barracks they set up then would become such a successful kibbutz that is still run today as a cooperative kibbutz. Kibbutz Maabarot is the only cooperative kibbutz left in the Hefer Valley and as such, is like a human nature reserve located on the banks of the Alexander Stream Nature Reserve.
The kibbutz’s factories include Maabarot Products (Materna, Bonzo and La-Kat), “Trima” pharmaceutical factory, the “Altman” food supplement company and the “Adama” organic food company. And if that is not enough, Kibbutz Maabarot continues to maintain a flourishing agricultural industry.
Along with the spirit of the cooperative kibbutz, business initiatives by the kibbutz itself and Kibbutz Maabarot members have also sprung up, opening this special kibbutz to visitors as well. For example, you can eat in the dining hall. Behind it you’ll find a local bakery with treats made by a local baker. If you prefer vintage items, you’ll find “Artemis” second-hand store a perfect spot to rummage for treasures.
A complex of workshops was also established on Kibbutz Maabarot, including a goldsmithing studio where you can learn the art of jewelry making and photography studio. The “Scratched” vinyl record store is considered to be one the best in the country. And with music in mind, on Kibbutz Maabarot you’ll also find the “Ozen Music” recording studio – a recording studio where many artists, professionals and amateurs, have fulfilled their musical recording dreams.
